Coordinated Leadership:CASH’N is guided by a multi-provincial Steering Committee comprised of senior representatives from each of the Atlantic Provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), as well a few CMAR team members. This committee provides strategic direction, oversight, and ensures that the initiative aligns with the needs and priorities of the region.
The Atlantic shellfish industry is facing serious challenges from MSX (Haplosporidium nelsoni) and Dermo (Perkinsus marinus). While these diseases are not harmful to people and do not affect the safety of consuming infected shellfish, they can cause severe mortality in oysters, reduce productivity, and threaten the long-term viability of the sector.
Recognizing the inherent value and integration of this regional industry, the Atlantic provinces have taken a collaborative approach to navigating this challenging period by establishing the Canadian Atlantic Shellfish Health Network (CASH’N) to support a more coordinated and proactive approach to shellfish health management across Atlantic Canada.
